Christian Felley was awarded the Swiss Federal Medical Diploma of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland in 1984. Following six years’ postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University Hospital in Lausanne, he specialised in gastroenterology and hepatology in the USA (at the Digestive Diseases Branch of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland under the supervision of Dr. R. Jensen) and in Switzerland (in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology of the University Hospital in Lausanne under the supervision of Prof. A.-L. Blum, and at the Geneva University Hospitals under the supervision of Prof. A. Hadengue).
While in the USA, he studied the fundamental mechanisms of the physiology of gastric secretion (articles published in the American Journal of Physiology). His long and extensive training has enabled him to acquire considerable expertise in all domains of gastroenterology and hepatology, and he was appointed as a Teaching and Research Fellow at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne.
His clinical expertise and his interest in the mechanisms of inflammation have lead him in the direction of the study and treatment of inflammatory intestinal disorders. He plays a key role in the development of a centre of clinical excellence in this domain at the University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland. This centre aims to integrate the specialist treatment of patients with basic and clinical research in the domain, and participation in international clinical research studies in collaboration with the best European treatment centres.
